This duo is from Canada! I (Mary) am from Cornwall, Ontario, a city about an hour from Ottawa, and consider myself Irish-Canadian as all of my family are in the UK. Scott is from South Glengarry, a neighbouring county to Cornwall.
Up Close and Personal
While we are both musically inclined, our lives behind the music are fairly ordinary. I’m a university student at Queen’s University, Kingston, eventually hoping to graduate a singing lawyer after my BH, and Scott is a high school math teacher…I know, what a mix! However, we both deserve a degree in sarcasm and smartassery =)
As far as my hobbies go, they still involve a lot of writing (lyrics, poetry, short stories), as well as reading, baking/cooking (I love cheesecake…), beading, and scrapbooking. Scott’s also a writer, as well as a gamer.
Individual Musical Background
Scott has been playing guitar about 15 years, having been influenced by a friend to start playing, and prides himself in creating textured combinations and using dense chords, not to mention some pretty brilliant guitar solos! He also sings, and is quite the lyricist with a tendency toward striking and compelling words and themes.
I have been writing lyrics for nearly as long as I can remember. My mother always kept a notepad next to my bed and encouraged me to write. The result was me writing a plethora of song lyrics rather than keeping the traditional girlish diary. Eventually, my scant verses developed with my passion for language (did I mention I’m an English Major heh heh?), including my intense love for metaphors, analogies, and imagery.
How the Band Came to Be
Having heard a song Scott recorded a few months before, I messaged him on Facebook in the early months of 2015 to congratulate him and praise his talent, as well as share with him a song I wrote influenced by his work. We had met a few years prior at a birthday party, and began swapping lyrics and rough MP3s, just for fun. Once he learned of my “anthology” of lyrics and melodies sitting stagnant in my bedroom, we took the above-mentioned song and brought it to life. This song was “Free,” and was the birth of our duo.
We both have quite different musical backgrounds, and have somehow managed to meld and create our distinctive sound. I grew up on a mélange of Celtic music, such as Enya and Loreena McKennit, Irish folk music, April Wine, Sarah McLachlan, The Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, and Evanescence. My present tastes vary just as widely, from Birdy to Passenger,Ed Sheeran to David Archuleta, Daughtry, and Taylor Swift. Yes, I am a musical mutt! Scott draws influence from some of his favourites in rock and metal, such as Rush, Muse, Boston, Def Leppard, Triumph, Tool, and Megadeth.
Neither of us can pinpoint one artist who has influenced our work, and it’s this unique combination of individual tastes that has created our sound. In other words, a lot of teamwork and compromise!
